
Contra - Demo

This is the fifth edition of my hack of Contra, modified with Red Falcon editor. The previous levels were expanded so much that the remaining space in the ROM would not be enough to contain all the subsequent additions. So I decided to use another ROM and make it Part 2. The final hack will probably spawn 2 ROMs as well. Not as cool as ROM expansion, but switching ROMs really is a small hassle in comparison...

We are now back to horizontal scrolling, with the Snow Field tile set, Turret Men and Tanks. All the previous tweaks were kept through this ROM, so common enemies, like Rifle Men and Running Men, have the same behavior. Turret Men shoot faster bullets. The level is a whopping 53 screens long...

The big change is the Tank enemy. In the original game, I found that the Tank is quite a stupid enemy, with a crapload of HP, slow reaction time and slow bullets. If you happen to have the M or F weapon, you have very little chance of survival because after a fixed delay, the Tank just moves ahead and crushes you if you don't destroy it in time. Now the Tank has a new mortar launcher that will make it a more interesting enemy. Its cannon moves faster and shoots faster bullets, at random. So in a way, it got more difficult, but you have now much more time to destroy it, and the fight is less monotonous...

The Boss, which I call the Alien Carrier, is also much harder, with a lot more HP and faster attacks...
